Things to Consider When Hiring a Roofing Company
Repairing or replacing a roof is a major expense for most homeowners. It’s a good idea to be careful when hiring a roofer. Let’s look at a few things you should consider when hiring a roofing company.
#1 Always Get a Quote
You need to know how much the job is going to cost before you sign the contract. Make sure the quote is detailed. Does it contain everything you wanted or is something missing? Getting multiple quotes is another good idea, so you can compare prices among roofing companies.
#2 Ask Questions Until You’re Satisfied
If you have any questions about a quote or a contract, ask questions. Keep asking questions until you’re satisfied. If the roofer is evasive or gets upset because you’re asking too many questions, move on to another roofing company. It’s your money, your property, and your peace of mind.
#3 Get All the Details First
You need to know everything there is to know about your roofing company. Their legal name, address, phone number, licensing and insurance information are just the start. Make note of the sales person’s full name and contact information. This information is invaluable if something goes wrong.
#4 Make Sure the Workers Have Received Proper Training
By law, workers must take fall prevention training before working above 3 meters. The employer must provide safety training on other workplace hazards. The employer must also require workers to use fall protection equipment. No exceptions. Ask the roofing contractor when the workers went through Working at Heights training or other fall protection training.
#5 Avoid “Tax-Free” Deals
Roofers who offer a “tax-free” deal on roofing repairs or replacements are skirting the law. Besides the tax issues, they are likely skirting other key consumer and work protections. If you have the work done on a “tax-free” deal, you lose the legal recourse over the services and goods purchases. That means you could end up paying twice for a new roof due to shoddy workmanship.
#6 Make Sure the Contractor’s Registered with the WSIB
The Workplace Safety & Insurance Board administers compensation and no-fault insurance for contractors. If the contractor isn’t registered, then the workers aren’t covered in case of injury. Also, if the contractor causes damage to your property, the costs aren’t covered by insurance.
#7 Check the Roofer’s Background
Use the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services’ Consumer Beware List to see if there are issues with the roofer’s work. A contractor will show up in the list if the company didn’t respond after two notifications of a consumer complaint or if charged or convicted under the Consumer Protection Act or other acts of the ministry.
Taking a bit of care when hiring a roofer will give you protection in case something happens. While it takes a bit more time, it will pay off with quality work and a safe workplace for everyone.

We would definitely recommend Select Roofing to our friends and family. They really go the extra mile to ensure you’re happy and the quality of work is stellar.
We got quite a few quotes for a new shingled roof. Select Roofing wasn’t the cheapest quote we got, but they dealt with us very professionally and took the time to explain the process to us. We were really happy with the cleanliness and safety precautions taken by their crew and they did a fantastic job for us.
We hired Select Roofing to replace our aging and leaking roof. The process was great right from the Start. Matt was very helpful, quoted us a very reasonable price and we felt confident moving forward. We were very happy with the work from Matt and his team!
